This month, the Australian Cardijn Institute is thrilled to have Mark Ager and Joe Catania revisit Cardijn’s legendary lecture series, “The Young Worker Faces Life,” delivered 75 years ago in 1949.
From 1931 to 1957, Cardijn captivated Belgian YCW leaders with his annual summer school lectures in Godinne. Among these, “The Young Worker Faces Life” stands out, detailing the jocist method of leadership and lay apostolate formation.
In 1961, the Melbourne YCW brought these influential lectures to a wider audience with their popular translation.

Mark Ager
Mark Ager began his journey with the Salisbury Young Christian Workers (YCW) in Adelaide, guided by Chaplain Hugh O’Sullivan. Through the review of life and enquiries, Mark learned to integrate Christianity into his daily life, including his work. After serving as group president, he joined the Diocesan Team under Chaplain Tom Gleeson.
Inspired by Joseph Cardijn’s book, The Young Worker Faces Life, Mark gained a deep appreciation for the YCW method, which he continues to apply in both his personal and professional life. As an active member of the Cardijn Institute and Community, Mark contributes by writing quarterly enquiries.
Joseph Catania
Joseph Catania has been the Director of Faith and Mission at St Dominic’s Priory College since 2023. Before this role, he spent ten years as the Assistant Principal for Religious Identity and Mission (APRIM) at Cardijn College. His career in Catholic education also includes a decade as the Coordinator of Youth Ministry and Liturgy at both Cardijn College and the Noarlunga-Seaford Catholic Parish.
Joseph’s journey into education followed a 16-year career in the trades, where he owned a business and taught his craft.
