Bishop Peter Cullinane

Born on 29 November 1936, Bishop Peter was the first bishop of the Diocese of Palmerston North, created in 1980.

After many years of service, he retired in 2012 but still remains an active Diocese member. Bishop Peter is a respected writer and leader of retreats who, in his retirement, is still busy at local, national, and international levels.

He completed a licentiate in sacred theology at the Angelicum in Rome in 1964 and a master’s in theology in Otago in 1980.

He served as president of the New Zealand Catholic Bishops’ Conference between 1997 and 2003 and as a member of the Episcopal Board of the International Commission on English in the Liturgy (ICEL) between 1983 and 2003

In 1990, Bishop Peter was awarded the New Zealand 1990 Commemoration Medal. In the 2006 New Year Honours, he was appointed a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to the community.
