Brian Smiddy is a former Young Christian Worker (YCW), Highett, Victoria member. An act of kindness shines brightly through the simple yet profound actions of Brian. This story is a testament to the enduring impact of the YCW’s method of formation and the powerful influence of excellent chaplains and young worker leaders.

Whenever Brian visits the local shops, he often encounters John, a man in his 70s who seems to carry the weight of loneliness and hardship. Inspired by the teachings of his YCW days and motivated by the belief that everyone is made in the image and likeness of God, Brian has made it a point to reach out to John with friendship and compassion.

Brian’s approach to helping others is deeply rooted in the lessons he learned from his father. His dad always carried a few coins in his pocket, saying, “You never know when you are going to bump into someone who needs a feed.” This simple yet profound principle has guided Brian in his acts of kindness.

A poignant story from Joseph Cardijn’s life also resonates with Brian. Cardijn’s mother once gave him the choice between giving a coin to the poor or buying an ice cream. This story encapsulates the essence of selflessness and generosity that Brian embodies.

Over the past few years, Brian has formed a genuine friendship with John. Their conversations at the shops have revealed John’s challenging living situation, sharing a house with other men and facing various difficulties. Brian often treats John to a coffee, offering not just a warm drink but also a sense of companionship and support.

Brian’s acts of kindness may seem small, but they carry immense significance. They remind us that compassion, friendship, and generosity can profoundly impact someone’s life. Brian’s story inspires us all to look for opportunities to help those around us and to act with kindness and love.
