About the Speakers
Sr Angela Carroll RSJ
A Sister of St. Joseph of the Sacred Heart, Sr Angela Carroll grew up in Brisbane and joined the congregation in 1959 after being involved in YCS during secondary school.
Her encounter with A Theology of Liberation in 1975 profoundly shaped her worldview. In 1984, she joined the Josephite mission in Lima, Peru, where she regularly attended Fr. Gustavo Gutiérrez’s summer theology courses.
In Peru, she developed a catechetics program translated into the local Quechua language, focusing on strengthening family relationships and empowering women against machismo and domestic challenges. She also helped establish a flourishing craft micro-business in the village of Picumarca, supporting local communities.
Jorge Jorquera
Originally from Chile, Jorge Jorquera migrated to Australia over 40 years ago and has been a dedicated activist, socialist, and advocate for migrant communities ever since.
During his university years, he was elected Secretary of the University of Queensland Student Union and led the National Free Education Coalition, which opposed the reintroduction of university fees. In the 1990s, he was instrumental in establishing one of the first Green Party branches in New South Wales.
Currently based in Footscray, Melbourne, he is a councillor for the City of Maribyrnong and works in community advocacy, social justice, and environmental activism. He also serves as coordinator of the Borderlands Cooperative, a group dedicated to progressive social change.
Michael Elphick
A theologian and educator with a lifelong commitment to human rights, theology, and religious education, Michael Elphick spent the first half of his career as a high school teacher and administrator. Later, he worked with the Edmund Rice Centre as a community educator, leading immersion programs in India and Southeast Asia and participating in human rights delegations to Africa, Palestine, and Central America.
Michael had the privilege of studying under Gustavo Gutiérrez at Boston College Summer Schools in 1997 and 2006, an experience that continues to shape his political and theological perspective.
He has also served as an adjunct lecturer at Notre Dame University (Fremantle and Sydney) and Arcadia University (Philadelphia, USA). Currently, he works to safeguard professional standards for the Missionary Society of St. Columban (Oceania) and the Scalabrinian Province of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini.
