Faith is a deeply personal journey shaped by experiences, relationships, and a community of shared beliefs. For me, Samantha Deconno, the Cardijn tradition has been an enduring companion on my spiritual path at Salisbury Catholic Parish, Adelaide.
My involvement with the Young Christian Workers was a significant milestone in my early formation. From attending formation events to soccer matches against refugee teams, these experiences brought me closer to the values of community, solidarity, and faith in action. A cherished memory from this period is my confirmation at 28, flanked by my confirmation leader Melissa Renshaw and the much-loved priest Jim O’Loughlan, as seen in the photo that marks this important occasion.
The presence of God’s goodness and mercy is something I’ve felt throughout my life. Becoming a Godparent, serving on the parish music liturgy committee, attending World Youth Day, and sponsoring my sister’s confirmation are some milestones that have deepened my faith and trust in God.
Learning and Growing
Studying has been a cornerstone of my personal and spiritual growth. Achieving a distinction in music theory not only advanced my piano teaching career but also enabled me to develop a mindfulness approach to music theory. Bible study has further enriched my understanding, combining personal reading with group discussions that have given me deeper insights into the gospels and the lives of biblical characters.
Finding Strength in Faith
The sacraments, along with my trust in God and the guidance of the Holy Spirit, have seen me through life’s trials and setbacks. When life feels overwhelming, I find solace in Luke 10:38, the story of Mary and Martha. It reminds me to seek balance and to pair active engagement with moments of prayerful reflection.
Saint Mary MacKillop’s life and spirituality have been a continual source of inspiration for me. From visiting her museum and sacred sites to engaging with her teachings through books and daily devotions, I’ve found a model of steadfast faith and service to emulate.
Living the Cardijn Tradition
The Cardijn Community has been a vibrant part of my faith journey. Our social enquiries, grounded in the See, Judge, Act methodology, encourage us to connect our lived experiences with Christian teaching. This process has been transformative, helping me rediscover purpose during holiday breaks by embarking on meaningful activities. With a fellow Cardijn Community member, I’ve visited culturally significant sites in Adelaide, including those tied to Saint Mary MacKillop and the art studio of Hans Heysen.
Guided by the Spirit
I’ve learned to hear God’s voice through the quiet, soft promptings of the Holy Spirit, which guide me daily. I am profoundly grateful for the family, friends, and community who have supported and nurtured my faith journey.
In my role as a piano teacher, I also strive to bring joy to the homes I serve, believing that music is a beautiful way to express and share God’s love.
May this journey continue to unfold, shaped by God’s grace and the unwavering support of my family, friends and community.
